Corvallis, the county seat, is well named. Taken from Latin, the name means "heart of the valley," and Benton County, as well as Corvallis, is in the heart of the Willamette Valley. Highway 20 connects Benton County with the Oregon Coast and Highway 99W joins the county to other points north and south. The Willamette River forms the eastern border of the county, which extends on the west into the Coast Range Mountains.
The Benton County Historical Museum in Philomath, Oregon, is housed in the former Philomath College Building. The central part of the building was completed in 1867. The left wing was added in 1905 and the right wing in 1907. Philomath College closed in 1927. The museum opened in 1980.
The Society was established in 1971 as the Mid-Valley Genealogical Society. The name was changed to the Benton County Genealogical Society in 1996.Its purposes are:Meetings: To encourage the study of family history through mutual support and the exchange of information. Library:To accumulate resource materials for the Society library. Service: To assist in the presersvation and publication of local history.

Corvallis \ kor-val'-is \ n: A remarkable little town nestled in the eastern foothills of a rather unremarkable range of mountains on a small blue planet far out in the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the galaxy. The planet is called Earth, for no apparent reason. The mountains are known as the Coast Range, so named because of their proximity to the coast -- isn't that clever?
From its first days as a small private college 137 years ago, Oregon State University has developed into the major research and teaching institution it is today. OSU's roots go back to 1858, with the founding of an academy incorporated as Corvallis College. College-level courses were introduced into the curriculum about 1865, and two men and one woman fulfilled the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in 1870, becoming the first graduates of a state-assisted college in the western United States.
